Mental Health Tips—Anxiety

“Slow breathing is like an anchor in the midst of an emotional storm: the anchor won’t make the storm go away, but it will hold you steady until passes.” – Russ Harris

Are you feeling anxious in classes, within your friend groups, or even at home? It’s ok. You are not alone, especially as we get closer to the end of the semester and you have tests and projects to worry about. Anxiety can look like a lot of different things, and as you are trying to navigate all of the things happening with being in college, it can be difficult at times to NOT feel anxious.  Anxiety can hit us in a number of different ways – for some, they can feel irritated, while others really notice their heart rate increasing.  For others they can notice themselves sweating, while sleeping is incredibly difficult for others.  Others really notice increased muscle tension and difficulty focus.  Remember, this is normal, and not something to feel ashamed with.  Here are some tips to help you with your anxiety:

  • Work on ways to manage and control your breathing. By taking slow, calm breaths, you are helping decrease your heart rate and allow yourself to re-engage in rational thinking. Try square breathing: Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, breath out for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds. Repeat.
  • Splash cold water on your face. Or put an ice pack (or something else that’s cold) on your forehead, or back of your neck.
  • Find your routine. Sleep can sometimes be easier to come by if you have a stable nighttime and morning routine.
  • Identify and address your “worry thoughts.” Are you worried about a grade, a project, your internship? Remind yourself that you are here for a reason. You have gotten this far and that counts! Don’t forget that we all make mistakes and it’s ok to not be perfect.
  • Listen to your music. Sometime listening to a happy song makes you feel happy. Sometimes listening to a motivational song, makes you feel motivated. Try exploring new music and see what inspires you.
